Common Types of Communication Cables ::

Network Cables :: Twisted-pair cables are most common types media cables used to connect devices to a network. These cables are the most common type of cabling found in LAN networks. They consist of 4 pairs transmitting data back and forth from the point of service. These Category cables (Cat5e/Cat6) can transmit data from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.

Coaxial cable :: These cables look similar to the cable used to carry TV signal. A solid-core copper wire runs down the middle of the cable covered by a layer of insulation which is further covered by braided wire and metal foil. This foil shields against electromagnetic interference. A final layer of insulation covers the braided wire. Coaxial cable has transfer rate of 10 Mbps.

Plenum Cables :: Plenum cables are special types of cables that are used in the plenum spaces of buildings. Plenum is a space that can facilitate air circulation for heating and air conditioning systems by providing pathways for either heated or air conditioned or return airflows. The plenum space is typically used to house the communication cables. These spaces are also hazardous in case of fire since it may provide fresh oxygen to the flame. Such cables are fire retardant and must be practiced when running cables through plenum spaces.
